DMX is still in a “grave condition” in hospital where he reportedly remains on life support after suffering a heart attack.
The 50-year-old rapper, whose real name is Earl Simmons, has little to no brain activity or function, his former manager told The New York Times and BuzzFeed on Sunday.
Hundreds of people attended a prayer vigil outside White Plains Hospital on Monday organized by the rapper’s family.
A video posted to YouTube by Storyful shows hundreds of well-wishers who showed up to support DMX outside the hospital in White Plains, New York.
“On Friday night, April 2nd, 2021, our brother, son, father, and colleague DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, was admitted to White Plains (NY) Hospital, facing serious health issues,” DMX’s family said in a statement to ET. “We ask that you please keep Earl/DMX and us in your thoughts, wishes, and prayers as well as respect our privacy as we face these challenges. Thank you.”
Angelo Ellerbee, a representative for the family, told the magazine that DMX is in a “medical state from which I don’t think he will recover.”
In a statement released Sunday, the family added: “We ask that you please keep Earl/DMX and us in your thoughts, wishes, and prayers as well as respect our privacy as we face these challenges.”
The family confirmed that DMX is in a coma and was on a ventilator. Simmons’ former manager Nakia Walker, told BuzzFeed that the rapper was in a “vegetative state” with “lung and brain failure.”
DMX’s long-time attorney Murray Richman said his client is in a “grave condition” during a radio appearance on Sunday.
“I received the call this morning that he was in the hospital,” Richman told ABC New York station WABC, confirming that he spoke to his client’s family about his condition. “He is in grave condition, whatever that means. That’s exactly what I’ve been told.”
Newsweek has contacted DMX’s publicist and lawyer for an update on his condition as of Tuesday morning.
A number of high-profile voices from the music world have been sharing support for the rapper, with LeBron James, Kelly Rowland and more calling for his recovery.
“To one of my fav artist growing up and still to this day DMX, my prayers are with you and sent to the almighty heaven’s above!” James tweeted on Monday.
“Lord God in Heaven, bless our brother DMX,” Rowland of Destiney’s Child fame said on Instagram. “I ask that you will bless his family. I ask that you will wrap them with love and support right now. Lord God I ask that you would please cover and keep our brother DMX right now in his bed, Lord God.”
While actress Gabrielle Union added: “Please pray, send healing energy, whatever positive vibes you can for #DMX.”
