Microsoft may be close to announcing the Surface Laptop 4. On Tuesday, it quietly posted driver and firmware pages for the unannounced product, which was spotted by a Twitter user.
One support page is for the Intel-based version of the Surface Laptop 4. The other is for the AMD-based model. Unfortunately, the pages don’t reveal much else. Clicking on the download function for either page simply leads to small text files that say “Surface Laptop 4 with Intel Processor” or “Surface Laptop 4 with AMD Processor.”
Nevertheless, the support pages indicate AMD is making steady progress in getting the biggest PC brands to adopt its Ryzen CPUs. (On Wednesday, Dell Alienware introduced its first AMD-powered gaming laptop in over a decade. The Surface Laptop 3 15-inch edition also used Ryzen 3000 chips.)
Last month, German site WinFuture said it obtained specs for the Surface Laptop 4 models. According to them, the laptops will use Intel’s 11th generation Core “Tiger Lake” CPUs, specifically the Core i5-1145G7 and Core i7-1185G7.
But surprisingly for the AMD models, Microsoft has decided to use the older Ryzen 5-4680U and Ryzen 7-4980U chips, instead of the newer Ryzen 5000 mobile CPUs unveiled in January. However, WinFuture says Microsoft plans on calling the AMD chips “Surface Edition” CPUs.
The Surface Laptop 4 will reportedly still come in 13.5-inch and 15-inch sizes. However, both models will adopt a larger 49Wh battery over the 45.8Wh battery in the Surface Laptop 3.
Microsoft is expected to officially announce the Surface Laptop 4 later this month. Stay tuned for our coverage.
