Justin Rose recovered from a stuttering start to continue to set the pace in the 85th Masters as a high-class chasing pack took shape at Augusta National.
Rose held a four-shot lead following a brilliant 65 on a tough opening day when just two other players broke 70, but saw that wiped out after covering his first 12 holes in three over.
Three birdies in the next four holes took Rose back out in front and a second round of 72 kept the 2013 US Open champion in pole position in pursuit of a second major title.
At seven under par, Rose was two shots ahead of 2015 champion Jordan Spieth and Australia’s Marc Leishman, with world number two Justin Thomas a stroke further back alongside Tony Finau and Bernd Wiesberger, who both shot 66.
Among the big names to miss the cut were defending champions Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka and Lee Westwood.

THE MASTERS 2021: KOEPKA DISAPPOINTED AT MISSING CUT
Brooks Koepka worked tirelessly after undergoing knee surgery to be able to compete this week. After missing the cut, he was not in positive spirits. “How f***ing disappointed do you think I am? I worked my ass off just to get here, and then to play like this is pretty disappointing.”

THE MASTERS 2021: RAHM FURIOUS AFTER BLUNDER AT 15
Even a joyous Jon Rahm cannot quell the fury after dropping a shot at the 15th. The Spaniard’s approach into the par-5 found the water and he fails to get up and down after taking a penalty drop. It’s not happened for him at all today, despite his great record at Augusta, and he’s some eight shots back of leader Justin Rose.

THE MASTERS 2021: MISERY FOR MCILROY
It’s been a miserable day and tournament for Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman is two-over-par for his round and despite birdieing the 15th, he’s still almost certain to miss the cut.
Commentating on Sky Sports, former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley said: “He’s starting to doubt himself, confusion in his swing and nobody’s ever played well with a whole lot of thoughts in your head. There’s a lot of work to be done. I think the best thing for Rory is a few weeks in the sunshine on a beach somewhere and clear his head. Sometimes the harder you try at this game the harder it gets, no matter how talented you are.”

THE MASTERS 2021: ANCER CLOSES WITH A 69
Abraham Ancer can count himself a little unlucky. The Mexican, who played alongside Dustin Johnson in the final group on Sunday last November, was penalised for a barely visible infraction in the bunker long after he’d completed his round yesterday. Rather than let it burden him, he’s carded an impressive 69 that leaves him level par for the tournament.

THE MASTERS 2021: SCHAUFFELE MAKING LATE RUN
Xander Schauffele has been a little quiet so far but is trying to force himself into contention late in the day here. The world No 6, who finished second in 2019, birdied the par-5 13th and has a chance for another at 15. An errant drive forced him to lay up but he’ll have just 107 yards into the green from there.
