The B.C. government says a new program that teaches kids in Grade 4 and Grade 5 how to safely ride bikes will roll out this spring.
Participating schools in the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and in the Southern Interior will take part in the two-day Everyone Rides program starting April 12.
The program, which is run by HUB Cycling, aims to provide children with safety awareness and practical cycling skills to ride their bicycles.
Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming said cycling is a fun and healthy way for children to get to and from school.
“As the weather is warming up and we are encouraging people to get outside more, we are happy to work together with HUB Cycling and the schools to help get elementary school children on the right path toward safe cycling,” he said, in a statement Saturday.
On the first day of the program, the children have a 45- to 60-minute in-class or online introduction to cycling and helmet safety.

The second day is a 70- to 90-minute practical session, where the children get to practise basic cycling skills, including starting, stopping, turning, using hand signals, recognizing road signs and traffic safety.
Minister of Education Jennifer Whiteside said the program teaches students road safety, promotes physical activity and wellness, and teaches youth to find more eco-friendly ways of transportation as they reduce carbon emissions and help build a more sustainable B.C.
About 8,000 students from 80 Greater Victoria, Kelowna, Metro Vancouver and Salt Spring Island schools are expected to participate in the 2021 Everyone Rides program.
Bikes and helmets will be provided, as well as adaptive bikes for children with disabilities.
Last year, HUB Cycling launched the pilot Everyone Rides program, which included 1,800 students through a combination of online, in-class and on-bike learning.
