PSL wrap: Swallows break nine-match winless spell with Black Leopards victory, Golden Arrows drop points to Bloemfontein Celtic
The Birds have lost just once this season in 21 league matches, but their hopes of challenging for the title have been dampened by 12 draws
Swallows FC ended a nine-game winless run in the league with a 1-0 victory over Black Leopards at the Dobsonville Stadium while Golden Arrows were held to a 1-1 draw by Bloemfontein Celtic at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.
The only goal of a tight match in Gauteng was scored in the 63rd minute by Ghana marksman Daniel Gozar, who slotted home a penalty kick in what was a rare start for him this season.
The Birds had also enjoyed good first-half chances – through Kgaogelo Sekgota and Gozar – who had one effort saved and also had a goal ruled out for offside.
With just a point from their last six outings, Lidoda Duvha are starting to look like they could be on the way back down to the second tier – the bottom-of-the-table club are six points from safety with just eight games to play.
Swallows, meanwhile, remain in with a chance of at least a top two finish, which would mean Champions League football next term. Brandon Truter’s side are fourth, four points behind second-placed AmaZulu and seven behind Mamelodi Sundowns.
Down in Durban, both Golden Arrows and Bloemfontein Celtic squandered numerous goal-scoring chances as they shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
The Free State side had drawn first blood in the 32nd minute when Mzwanele Mahashe’s header took a deflection off teammate Victor Letsoala, which had the beating of Abafana bes’Thende keeper Sifiso Mlungwana.
Arrows rallied hard after the setback but failed to level the game before the interval as Velemseni Ndwandwe was denied by Jackson Mabokgwane before Knox Mutizwa struck the woodwork with a header.
Celtic, meanwhile, wasted chances of their own to add to their tally and they paid the price with 18 minutes left to play when Siphamandla Sabelo’s cross deflected off a defender and hit the crossbar before being headed over the goal-line by Mutizwa.
The hosts ended the game with 10 men after Ntsako Makhubela was shown a second yellow card in the 86th minute.
The draw means Arrows remain third, five points behind Sundowns and two behind AmaZulu, while Celtic are 10th.
