One person was killed and a police officer was wounded in a shooting at a high school in Knoxville, Tennessee, authorities said Monday. There’s no active threat to the public and the Austin-East Magnet High School has been secured, officials said.
One person, identified only as a male, has been detained for further investigation, Knoxville police said in a statement. The deceased victim was identified only as a male. The wounded officer, who has also not been identified, is conscious and expected to survive.
Police said they responded to a report of a man who was possibly armed in the school at approximately 3:15 p.m. local time. Upon approaching the suspect, shots were fired, and the police officer was hit at least once, police said. The other victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said there are no other known gunshot victims.
Students who were not involved in the incident were sent home, said Bob Thomas, the superintendent of Knox County Schools. Prior to Monday’s violence, four students have been fatally shot this year alone.
