Multiple gunshot victims have been reported at a Tennessee high school shooting, including a police officer on the scene.
Knoxville Police Department announced the shooting at Austin-East Magnet High School on Monday afternoon.
While residents were warned to avoid the area of active investigation, two anonymous sources told Knox News the situation was no longer “active”.
Multiple agencies responded to the shooting and have blocked access to parts of the neighbourhood, while school spokeswoman Carly Harrington told the outlet the school was in lockdown.
The school established a nearby baseball field near Wilson Avenue and Hembree Street as a reunification site for parents to find their children who attend the school.
This latest incident follows recent mass shootings in Colorado, Atlanta and South Carolina that have led to a push by the Biden administration for tougher gun control reforms.
The superintendent of Knox County Schools, Bob Thomas, tweeted that later on Monday that the building had been secured and students released to join their families.
“We are gathering information about this tragic situation and will provide additional information as soon as possible,” he said.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
