Three people are dead after a fatal shooting in Austin, Texas, and police are hunting for a suspect according to local emergency responders.
Police have tentatively named Stephen Nicholas Broderick as the suspect. He is armed, dangerous, and still at large after fleeing the scene. It is unknown if he fled on foot or in a vehicle.
Local residents were advised to shelter in place for fear of an active shooter situation and while the suspect is still at large.
Police also said that it appears to have been a domestic situation, and there is no risk to the general public. Austin-Travis County EMS says there are no reports of further victims.
Mr Broderick is a former Travis County Sheriff’s Office detective and was charged with the sexual assault of a child in June 2020, according to KXAN.
He was placed on administrative leave at the time and was in custody at Travis County jail on a $100,000 bond.
There was a huge police presence on the scene near the junction Great Hills Trail and Rain Creek Parkway in the Arboretum area. A heavily-armed SWAT team in military fatigues was seen as part of the response.
The incident occurred at an apartment complex just a few blocks from a strip mall and Trader Joe’s grocery store and was reported to EMS at 11.42am local time.
First responders found three adults, two Hispanic women, and a Black man, with gunshot wounds. They were pronounced dead at the scene. A preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect knew the victims.
Interim chief of police Joseph Chacon says that a child was involved, but is safe and now in custody.
A number of roads were closed off in the area and people asked to report any suspicious activity as the hunt for the suspect continues.
