British media reported that the UK will place India on international travel “red list” from 04.00 (local times) on Friday.
“Indians will not be allowed entry unless they have a British passport or hold residence permit. Even in that case, mandatory 10 days hotel quarantine plus release tests will be required,” people in the know said.
This follows a ban on flights by Hong Kong from India, Pakistan and the Philippines for two weeks starting April 20, announcement was made on Sunday.
According to the statement, ‘these three countries would be classified as extremely high-risk after there had been multiple imported cases carrying the strain into Hong Kong in the past 14 days.’
According to reports, passengers on Vistara’s Mumbai-Hong Kong flight tested positive for Covid-19 on arrival. Reports had also suggested that 47 passengers who flew in on the Vistara flight had tested positive.
All passengers flying into Hong Kong need to have a Covid-negative RTPCR result from a test done 72 hours prior to the journey, according to rules, and the airline said it followed all rules.
Experts believe that there could be several reasons for people infecting in flights. According to them, potential reasons could be Bad (defective) testing equipment, Bad testing skills or procedures or strain not being detected by Indian tests.
“Other reasons could be forged reports by passengers or these passengers getting infected in the 72 hours between flight and test. Especially the 22, who tested positive later, could have either been infected on the flight or in the quarantine facility,” said an industry insider.
India has, in recent weeks, seen an unprecedented spike in infections as part of what is being called the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. On Sunday, it recorded its highest ever number of fresh cases at over 273,000.
