Apple today launched the much awaited update for the iPad Pro series (along with a new iMac and AirTags) and it was definitely worth the wait. While the most important update went individually to the 12.9” version of the tablet, most other updates came across the duo.
M1 comes to iPad
Released last year, Apple’s extremely popular and powerful M1 chips have now made their way to the iPad Pro. The M1 will deliver 50% faster performance, 40% better graphics, better battery-life and much more power efficiency on the iPads.
The iPads also comes enabled with 5G and WiFi 6 for the fastest possible connectivity available today.
Mini-LED comes but only to the 12.9”
Mini-LED technology on the iPads had been rumored for a while now and it’s finally here with 10,000 mini-LEDs (And 2596 dimming zones) but unfortunately only on the larger 12.9” iPad Pro. This new Liquid Retina XDR display brings 1000 nits of full-screen brightness, 1600 nits of peak brightness, ProMotion 120Hz and a P3 wide colour gamut to the larger iPad Pro.
The 11” version retains it’s Liquid Retiuna display. While it stands it’s own as a great display, the mini-LEDs on the smaller version would have been appreciated too.
Center Stage
An update i think could be very crucial is the new front facing camera on the iPad Pros. The new camera is a 12MP 122-degree field of view sensor which will enable the camera to have a wide view of the surroundings and even center the person/s in focus and move with them (to a certain extent).
And yes, Face ID is there too.
AR stays
Apple continues it’s concentration on augmented reality (AR) with the iPad Pros. You get a triple camera setup with a 12MP wide, a 10MP) ultra-wide and a LiDAR Scanner.
Thunderbolt
Content creators rejoice! Now transferring data on the new iPad Pros will go up to speeds of 40Gbps thanks to Thunderbolt. Fast external storage, displays up to 6K and a host of accessories will now work with ease.
iPad OS 14
While there isn’t any major update to the operating system on the iPad, the addition of the M1 chipset brings a whole new set of expectations for WWDC 2021. Will we see a Final Cut iPad version? While apps like Photoshop offer their full versions on the iPad?
Updated Magic Keybaord
Last year’s floating Magic Keyboard now comes in a stunning white colour. Considering Apple’s case materials, I’d be very curious to see how long they stay clean, specially in environments like the UAE.
