As part of The Post’s 2021 NFL Draft preview, we examine what the Giants might do at each position. Thursday: Cornerback.
Do the Giants have enough cornerbacks? Perhaps, if everything goes according to plan with the players they have on their roster, which almost never happens. Could they take a cornerback high in this NFL draft — as high as the No. 11-overall pick? That is certainly a possibility, although it is more likely they go in a different direction in the first round.
Two years ago, the Giants traded up into the first round to take DeAndre Baker out of Georgia with the No. 30-overall pick. That turned out to be a terrible pick, considering Baker had a bad rookie year and was released after he was hit with serious criminal charges in Florida (the charges were dropped after the Giants let him go). Taking Sam Beal in the 2018 supplemental draft has also, thus far, amounted to nothing. Beal’s NFL résumé includes only six games played in three seasons; he opted out in 2020.
These misses made it imperative the Giants open the vault in 2020 to sign James Bradberry and do it again in 2021 to sign Adoree’ Jackson. Bradberry was tremendous in his Giants debut season. Jackson will be an immediate starter. They also have Darnay Holmes as a slot corner entering his second NFL season, as well as Isaac Yiadom, who started 10 games in 2020, as the Giants struggled to find an outside corner to use with Bradberry.
Caleb Farley of Virginia Tech is a stud, but there are injury concerns. Patrick Surtain II from Alabama should be on the board for the Giants. If he is, he is tough to pass up, but the Giants probably will do so. It is more likely they go for a corner later in the draft.
