HER paid tribute to her “lifetime inspiration” Prince with her 2021 Oscars outfit.
On Sunday, the singer arrived on the Oscars red carpet in a deep purple Dundas jumpsuit and cape, which was inspired by the Oscars outfit worn by the late singer in 1985, when he won the award for Best Original Song Score for Purple Rain.
HER’s sweet tribute, which came a week after the five-year anniversary of Prince’s death, featured details celebrating her own Oscar-winning song Fight for You from Judas and the Black Messiah.
The border of the purplish-blue cape featured hand-embellished lyrics from the song, as did the borders of the jumpsuit worn underneath the head covering, which featured cut-out details and wide legs.
The singer paired the look with a pair of round circle sunglasses in a mauve colour, a long wavy hairstyle, and a matching lipstick.
In a statement to InStyle, designer Peter Dundas said: “HER expressed how Prince has been a lifetime inspiration for her and had built the foundation for her musical identity.”
The designer also said that he wanted the outfit to “feel like armour,” adding: “I wanted [it] to feel like armor – words have such great power and it’s impossible not to feel touched by the important and impactful message of strength and justice behind the song, especially given what is happening in the world right now.”
Ahead of the show, the singer-songwriter, whose real name is Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, told People that the outfit was “definitely inspired by an era” and also by “one of my favourite artists”.
“So yeah, it’s going to be, I think, iconic,” she’d added.
On Twitter, the homage was a hit with viewers, with one person tweeting: “CONGRATULATIONS to HER for Best Original Song… and for channeling Prince and his 1985 Win for best score.
Another person wrote: “Prince smiling upstairs at HER wearing a get-up inspired by what Prince wore when he won his Oscar. #Oscars.”
