Spotify is to increase the price of a number of its premium plans, it has announced.
The individual subscription will not increase, the company said. But the rest of them will be affected, depending on where users are.
In recent years, Spotify has introduced a number of group options that allow numerous people to pay one subscription and get access to their own individual Spotify accounts. Depending on how many people need an account, they can choose from either Duo (two accounts) or Family (up to six accounts) subscriptions.
It is those – as well as the cheaper student subscription – that will be affected by the new price increases.
In the US, only Family accounts will be affected by the price rise. The cost will go from $14.99 to $15.99 after the change.
The changes are much more sweeping in the UK, however. The Student subscription will rise from £4.99 to £5.99, the Duo subscription will go from £12.99 and £13.99, and the Family plan will go from £14.99 to £16.99.
Similar changes will happen in other European, Asian and South American countries, too, with prices increasing by roughly the same amount.
Those who are affected will receive emails informing them that their subscription cost will be increasing. They will be given a month to respond to that, with the price increase arriving for existing subscribers in June.
Spotify did not rule out additional price increases, including in the US.
