Breaking News Live, Thursday, 29th April 2021: Voting for the eighth and final phase of the ongoing West Bengal assembly elections commenced at 7am on Thursday at polling booths across 35 assembly constituencies going to the polls in this phase.
All eyes will be on Trinamool Congress Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal as he is under the strict surveillance of the Election Commission. Mondal has been placed under surveillance till Friday 7 am, as the chief electoral officer in the state has received “several complaints against him”, an EC official said. The TMC leader was placed under similar surveillance during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the 2016 assembly polls.
Voting is done under the shadow of Covid 19 as West Bengal on Wednesday logged 17,207 fresh COVID-19 cases, the highest-single day spike recorded in the state so far, pushing the tally to 7,93,552, a bulletin issued by the health department said. The death toll climbed to 11,159 with 77 more fatalities which is also the maximum count during a day, it said.
Around 1.33 crore people applied for vaccination on Wednesday while 80 lakh people registered on Wednesday as the government’s dedicated website, CoWIN, opened for registrations on Wednesday.
Many people took to social media to complain about the technical problems they faced trying to register themselves for the third phase of the inoculation drive that is scheduled to begin from May 1. Some of them complained that the portal was not responding while others complained that it had crashed.
