Much has changed in the past year and remote working, the rise of AI along with automation has reshaped what our professional lives look like. This, in turn, has changed what employees are expecting from their workplaces too.
Recently, LinkedIn has compiled a list of their Top 15 Companies In Malaysia For 2021. It’s an annual guide that identifies the best places for professionals to grow their careers in Malaysia.
These companies were chosen based on a methodology that looks at 7 pillars, each revealing an important element of career progression. According to LinkedIn, these include the ability to advance, grow one’s skills, a company’s stability, the availability of external opportunities, company affinity, gender diversity, and educational background.
1. PETRONAS
Topping this year’s list is PETRONAS, which made it here for pushing gender equality. Now, it’s no secret that the oil and gas industry tends to be a male-dominated one, with women generally making up only 15% of the workforce. It’s a number that plummets going up the corporate ladder.
PETRONAS is showing progress here with 27% of its 39,600 Malaysian workforce being women, and with the company welcoming its first woman CFO, Liza Mustapha, in July 2020.
The industry is also looking at ways to transition from oil and gas into renewable energy as a whole, and PETRONAS is hoping to grow its local workforce.

2. Permodalan Nasional Berhad
Quickly introducing flexible working arrangements at the start of the pandemic is why Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) is on the list. Not to mention, the fund management company also introduced stress and time management training for its workers to help adapt to the new working arrangement.
PNB is also a patron for its education and advancement, by pushing its 1,755 local employees to further their tertiary education or pursue additional professional qualifications. It’s also mandatory for all employees to complete 64 hours of training a year, to increase competencies and develop skills to meet current and future demands.
The firm also provides a scholarship programme which has resulted in graduates joining the company and attaining management roles.

3. Tenaga Nasional Berhad
With 36,000 employees on the front lines of tackling climate change, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is shifting its focus and expanding its renewable energy footprint to Vietnam and Singapore.
Should this move work as intended, it will push the growth in demands for clean and green energy in the next few years within the SEA region. The move from fossil fuels to renewable energy will also in turn generate more jobs, according to TNB’s CEO Datuk Baharin Din.

With its 36-month leadership training programme for local AIA insurance agents, the firm also makes the top 5 for putting an emphasis on upskilling its workers.

Throughout the pandemic, OCBC Bank has supported its 5,000 staff by running virtual programmes that helped employees make sense of the crisis and stay healthy, both physically and emotionally. These programmes included workout sessions, where families and children were encouraged to join in, and highly technical courses such as robotics.
Last month, the bank also launched its OCBC Bank COVID-19 Vaccination Support Programme that permits a day off for staff to go for their vaccination, provides transport reimbursement for travels to vaccination centres, and medical leave for 2 days without MCs if side effects are present.

This is meant to ensure that employees have the necessary digital and soft skills to help them remain relevant as their roles evolve. PwC is also big on gender equality, where 42% of its partners and 51% of its managers are women, according to its website.

10. Standard Chartered Bank
Standard Chartered Bank is here due to its ability to advance by enabling flexibility for its 7,500 Malaysian employees to WFH since 2012, long before the pandemic. Their WFH arrangement allowed its staff a choice to do so at least one day a week, where no minimum length of service was required to qualify for it.
In November 2020 however, the bank noticed the benefits of still having face-to-face meetings with its clients, and shifted to providing a hybrid working arrangement. So, employees have the option to choose where and when they want to work, whether at home, at the office, or in a “near home” workspace.
Dictionary Time: “Work near home” means that companies pay for their staff to work in a coworking or flexible workspace that is convenient to where they live. Instead of renting a whole office for years at a time, they typically pay for monthly memberships for only the staff that need them.
