Kolkata: A complaint has been lodged against Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut with the Kolkata Police for her “demeaning and insulting” tweets, which have “hurt the sentiments” of the people of West Bengal.
Advocate Sumeet Chowdhury, who filed the complaint in this regard via email to Kolkata Police Commissioner Soumen Mitra, shared the links of Ranaut’s three posts on Twitter stating she has “demeaned, insulted, hurt the sentiments of the people of Bengal”.
Asserting that he has nothing to do with politics nor wants to get involved in it, Chowdhury while sharing Ranaut’s tweet said “but the way she has demeaned, insulted, hurt the sentiments of the people of Bengal, especially who have cast their votes, which is not only their Constitutional Right, but their duty as well, only goes to show her malafide and intentional intent to promote hatred amongst two religions by threatening a Kashmir like situation and saying that the voting “trend” shows that the Hindus are at risk as they are no longer a “majority” in Bengal.”
“This is instilling fear, disharmony and hatred in my mind, and I am sure in the minds of many who reside in Bengal as well as out of Bengal,” he added.
“Bangladeshi’s and Rohingyas are biggest strength of Mamata…. with the way trend is looking shows Hindus are no more majority there, and according to the data Bangali Muslims are the poorest and most deprived in whole India, good another Kashmir in the making… #Elections2021,” the actress wrote on Twitter.
“BJP has shown remarkable growth in #Bengal in 2016 they won 3 seats, growth is 2800 percent, need of the hour is NRC and CAA, in Bengal minority is majority now, nevertheless with the kind of ferocious passion and dedication Modi ji and Amit ji do their work is beyond admirable,” she said in another post.
Pointing out that Ranaut in her tweet once again says “in Bengal minority is majority now”, the advocate said: “Thus, by her two back to back tweets, she proves, beyond all reasonable doubts, her vengeance, her spiteful psyche and an absolute disregard towards the different religions that coexist in our country since history can remember.”
“Sir, such coexistence has taken place despite all odds, troubles, occasional rifts etcetera but to intentionally promote, instigate, spark a controversy is not only unwanted but also punishable under the laws of the land,” he added in his complaint.
The advocate also drew attention to a third post by Ranaut where she says: “Ha ha ha what is amusing now hyenas having a field day, even though BJP performed well every where but still after very long they got an opportunity to corner him, enjoy your day. But remember he will rise again like he always does … #BengalElection2021 #Bengal.”

He alleged that the actor in this tweet “breached all possible boundaries of her respect for the people of Bengal, for their democratic rights, for their power of judging who to vote for and who not to vote and their will, mandate and selection of the government under the rule of who, the people of Bengal can live peacefully or in harmony”.
“In a democracy, one may disagree with the opinion of another person’s choice of representative, but that hardly gives the first individual to compare the second person with a “hyena”. The accused has even attached a video of a group of hyenas attacking a lion in her said Tweet to buttress her statement,” he said.
The advocate in the above circumstances requested the Police Commissioner to take immediate steps to stop the actor from spitting venom and thus insulting the people of Bengal besides promoting disharmony and intimidating certain group of persons in the society.
“Unless immediate steps are taken, her actions may trigger a massacre in the society. Hence, kindly initiate proceedings against the accused under Section 153A of the IPC,” he said.
