We discovered the gorgeous, hilarious, forthright Danielle Prescod on Instagram—the former fashion editor practices radical honesty and speaks straight about everything, including racial justice and anxiety. Her mornings look a lot different lately: Now hard at work on a book, Token Black Girl (out fall 2021), Prescod is also a cofounder of 2BG (2 Black Girls) Consulting, a firm she and Chrissy Rutherford started during the Black Lives Matter movement to help educate and advise beauty and fashion brands on inclusivity, crisis management, and diversity. After many years in NYC, Prescod moved during the pandemic to New Orleans, where she’s staying for now.
Prescod’s mornings are designed to set her up to be both present and as calm as possible to move through her day. “I have a crippling desire for control,” she laughs. Meditation helps with staying both present and calm, as does a simplified skin-care regimen, exercise, and as of late, not a drop of makeup.
7:30 a.m.: The first thing I do before getting out of bed is meditate. I was super resistant to meditation, but now I have become one of those people who has to do it every day and who tells everyone else to do it, too. I have anxiety and can be overly critical of myself; meditation helps me focus my energy and gives me something to do that’s just for me. I use Insight Timer’s app. It is free, and I listen mostly to guided meditations by Black women. Meditation wasn’t an immediate love for me, but I kept at it, and over time, it has had a positive effect. You really just have to commit to doing it daily.
8 a.m.: Next I make my bed. I am crazy about making my bed. My mom was strict with us with this chore when I was growing up, and it stuck. I have to make my bed so that I get out of it and start my day. If my bed is not made, I am convinced my day will dissolve into chaos.
8:10 a.m.: I used to work in beauty, and that meant that I was always trying new things. It was horrible for my skin, so now I try to keep my skin-care situation simple. I wash my face with Kat Burki KB5 Calming Gel Cleanser or Dr. Barbara Sturm foam cleanser. I have naturally oily skin, so I usually cleanse morning and night.

If I didn’t use an overnight peel pad the previous evening (I swipe one on once a week for glow), I love the G.Tox tonic after cleansing. It’s toning and refreshing for my oily skin, but it’s got AHAs in it, so I skip it if I’ve used the peel, which is super exfoliating. My skin is pretty clear, but because I’ve got my hair in braids at the moment (which can be irritating), I use the glow pads nightly on my chest and back to fight breakouts there.

I live in Louisiana, where it’s very humid, so I don’t need any extra layers of moisturizer—the Glow Lotion is enough! I wore makeup pretty much every day of my life until March of 2020. Now I hardly ever wear it. Truly, I can count on one hand the number of times I put makeup on in 2020 and 2021. It’s been liberating. If I’m going outside, I put on SPF and that’s it.
9 a.m.: Twice a week, I go to private Pilates in the morning. The thing I’ve missed the most during the pandemic is my in-person workouts, so I’m relieved to be able to do this one-on-one. I also ride horses: I spend Thursday mornings at the barn—grooming, tacking, and then riding. Riding is a naturally socially distant sport, so I’ve been able to do that more easily than anything else. It’s always my favorite day of the week.

10 a.m.: Breakfast—I make a matcha latte with oat milk. On the weekends I make healthy pancakes and turkey bacon, but on the weekdays, I have an English muffin with cream cheese. I check my group chats to see what I might have missed overnight. I love talking to my friends about our fave reality shows like Real Housewives and 90 Day Fiancé.
Extra credit: If I feel dry, I love a little body butter. It smells so good and sinks right into my skin.
