Cheney: ‘No Other American President Has Ever Done This’
Cheney is the third ranking House Republican, but is mired in controversy over her vote to impeach former President Trump and her continual attacks on the very popular Republican president.
In a Washington Post op-ed published Wednesday, Cheney made clear she still stood by her earlier calls for Republicans to back away from Trump’s claims that the 2020 election was stolen.
Cheney said that former president Trump is “seeking to unravel critical elements of our constitutional structure.”
“Trump is seeking to unravel critical elements of our constitutional structure that make democracy work — confidence in the result of elections and the rule of law. No other American president has ever done this,” Cheney wrote.

Cheney pushed back on the increasing criticism against her.
She vowed to “defend the basic principles that underpin and protect” American democracy.

Cheney Won’t Back Down
“History is watching,” Cheney wrote. “Our children are watching. We must be brave enough to defend the basic principles that underpin and protect our freedom and our democratic process.”
“I am committed to doing that, no matter what the short-term political consequences might be,” she added.
Some GOP lawmakers are trying to push Cheney out of her leadership role, and are also pushing Rep. Elise Stefanik as a replacement. Stefanik has been endorsed by both Trump and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise.
Cheney’s op-ed mentions House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, and she claims that he “changed his story” on Trump’s impact on the Capitol Hill riot on January 6.
McCarthy said Trump “bears responsibility” in the wake of the attack and should have “immediately denounced the mob.”
But a week later, McCarthy said Trump the attack was not “provoked” by Trump.

“Trump has never expressed remorse or regret for the attack of Jan. 6 and now suggests that our elections, and our legal and constitutional system, cannot be trusted to do the will of the people,” Cheney wrote.
She added, “This is immensely harmful, especially as we now compete on the world stage against Communist China and its claims that democracy is a failed system.”
Trump was acquitted by the Senate of “inciting an insurrection.”
Cheney isn’t without support, though.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised Cheney for her “courage” and “patriotism.”
Cheney also earned praise from fellow “NeverTrump” Republican Mitt Romney.
