There had been murmurs that a reboot of the popular ’90s sitcom Martin could be in the works but it looks like this isn’t the case, at least according to former Martin stars Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold.
The duo, who played Gina Waters-Payne and Pamela “Pam James on the series, appeared on Tamron Hall’s talk show recently and they addressed the rumors of a Martin reboot. Arnold starts by saying “It’s something that we wanted to happen. It’s something that we tried very hard for it to happen, but the way it looks to me, realistically, it’s not going to happen. Not unless it’s an animation.”
The main obstacle in the way, at least for a live-action reboot, is that one of the series’ main stars is no longer with us. Thomas Mikal Ford, who played Thomas “Tommy” Strawn, passed away in 2016 at the age of 52 from a ruptured abdominal aneurysm. Arnold reiterated that the cast most likely wouldn’t do a reboot without Ford by saying “Maybe, but as far as a reboot, I don’t think that’s going to happen. Tommy is no longer with us.”
The animation idea was actually brought up by Tisha Campbell which could give the concept new life without tarnishing the legacy of the original series by not having Ford involved with the project. I respect the fact that they can’t see a viable way of bringing the show back without him because he was an integral part of the cast as they all played off each other well to deliver some truly hilarious moments on the show. As Arnold goes on to say, “This show is never going to be the same, it’s never and some things are best left alone” That being said, Arnold says “Now, we may be able to have a rebirth” to which Campbell chimed in by saying “Or a reunion.” Honestly, some kind of a reunion seems much more likely to happen.
Martin reboot rumors were first sparked in 2018 when Martin Lawrence, Campbell, and Arnold were interviewed by TMZ while they were out for lunch. Lawrence addressed the rumor by saying “Never say Never. We don’t know nothing right now, but never say never.” Arnold added, at the time, “Within life there’s always new beginnings and there’s always change and there’s always plateaus, so we’ll see what’s happening.”
Martin aired for five seasons on Fox from 1992-1997 and ran for 132 episodes. The show starred comedian and namesake Martin Lawrence as Martin Payne, a disc jockey who is in a relationship with Gina Waters (Campbell). Episodes often centered on Martin’s inappropriate behaviors and incessant smart mouth towards his friends, neighbors, and whoever finds themselves in his presence. Despite his irreverent attitude, Martin does have a deep love for his family and friends which shines through occasionally on the show. Lawrence famously played several other characters on the series and the show did a great deal to reflect the rising popularity of the Fox network through the ’90s. Throughout its run, Martin was one of the network’s highest-rated shows. In addition to Lawrence, Campbell, Arnold, and Ford, the series also starred Carl Anthony Payne II as Cole Brown.
