NBC won’t air Golden Globes in 2022 in protest of HFPA

The next Golden Globes may not air until 2023 — NBC announced on Monday that it would not be carrying the awards show until the Hollywood Foreign Press Association goes through a series of promised reforms addressing the group’s financial practices and lack of diverse representation.

“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” NBC announced. “However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes.” The network didn’t outright promise it would host the show again in the future, but made it clear the Golden Globes would be back on the table if the HFPA met its goals. “Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

The award show’s loss of an NBC airdate is the latest in a long line of rebukes from Hollywood studios and actors. In recent weeks, Amazon Studios, Netflix and WarnerMedia all agreed not to work with the HFPA until substantive changes are made. Actors like Mark Ruffalo, Scarlet Johansson, Jenifer Aniston and many others have spoke out against the organization as well.  

The backlash began after an Los Angeles Times article revealed that there were no Black journalists in the HFPA, causing the organization to release a statement promising “transformational change” and reform. NBC’s refusal to air the show is the latest move in an industry banding together in attempt to ensure that the HFPA lives up to its promise.
