Apple Music is making its biggest advancement in sound quality with a number of features available to subscribers starting next month at no additional cost. These include Spatial Audio with support for Dolby Atmos and Lossless Audio in more than 75 million songs.
Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos
Dolby Atmos allows artists to mix music so that sound comes from all around and from above. By default, Apple Music will play Dolby Atmos tracks on all AirPods and Beats headphones an H1 or W1 chip. Moreover, the built-in speakers in the latest versions of the iPhone, iPad and Mac will support Dolby Atmos.
At launch, subscribers can enjoy thousands of songs in Spatial Audio from the world’s biggest artists. Apple Music will be adding new Dolby Atmos tracks constantly and will be curating a special set of playlists to help listeners find music they love. Apple Music is also working with artists and labels to add new releases and the best catalogue tracks, as more artists begin to create music specifically for Spatial Audio.
Lossless Audio
Apple Music will also make Lossless Audio available to its entire catalogue. Here, Apple uses ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) to preserve every bit of the original audio file. You can start listening to Lossless Audio by opting in via the Apple Music settings. Apple Music’s Lossless tier starts at CD quality, which is 16 bit at 44.1kHz and goes up to 24 bit at 48kHz. For the true audiophile, Apple Music also offers Hi-Resolution Lossless all the way up to 24 bit at 192kHz.
