Eric Fisher says that it was “tough to watch” Patrick Mahomes get relentlessly attacked by the Bucs’ pass rush during the Super Bowl, as the left tackle wished he could step in and help protect his quarterback.
The Chiefs offensive line was in rough shape for the Super Bowl, with Fisher tearing his ACL during the AFC Championship Game and Mitchell Schwartz being on IR due to a back injury. As a result, Mahomes rarely had time to get comfortable; he was sacked three times, hit eight times and was pressured a Super Bowl-record 29 times in the loss.
“Sitting up in the stands, it was tough to watch, to know that the quarterback that I was protecting was running around there,” Fisher said. “It was tough to watch. I like being a consistent player, so to not be available to do that job for my team, it was tough. It just makes me want to get back and stay healthy and just continue to play high level football for a team.”
Fisher was not re-signed by the Chiefs following the injury but he will now have the opportunity to protect Carson Wentz, as he signed a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts.
