In a case of negligence, rats nibbled a newborn child’s feet in a government-run hospital here in Madhya Pradesh on Monday, prompting the facility’s management to order a probe, officials said. A case of rats gnawing at the feet of a child at government-run Maharaja Yeshwantrao (MY) hospitals nursery care unit for newborn babies – has come to light, the facility’s superintendent, Dr Pramendra Thakur, said.
Kishan, the infant’s father told the media that his wife had gone to the nursery at around 3 am on Monday to feed the baby and the child’s foot and ankle bleeding. The nursing staff who were asleep in the changing room were then woken up and dressed the wounds.
The parents said one of the infant’s toe fingers were missing. However, when flagged, the hospital staff offered just first aid and asked them not to alert the media. After the kin raised objections and protested against the hospital, staffers assured them that they would be consulting a plastic surgeon’s opinion to repair the feat.
Kins of several infants kept in the same nursery told the media that there are large rats inside the hospital and the nursery.
Thakur said a three-member committee – consisting of two doctors and an administrative officer – has been formed to conduct the probe. Dr Sanjay Dixit, Dean of the MG Medical College Indore, also said that the committee has been formed and strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
The hospital has past experience of negligent behaviour in the postnatal facilities. For example, last year an infant had suffered burn injuries after the staff did not monitor the baby kept in the warmer. A subsequent probe had found the staff did not give adequate supervision to the infants in its ward.
In 2015, the hospital had spent a whopping amount of Rs 1.5 crore to control rat infestation. However, these rodents later came back into the campus.
Prior cases of rats having nibbled patients, dead bodies were raised in view of the latest outrage. Stray dogs that had ventured into the hospital were also noted to be found dragging bodies of infants.
