As a 16-year-old, I feel Premier Doug Ford’s COVID-19 restrictions have impacted teenagers from all over Ontario. I have heard multiple complaints from my teenage friends and on social media.
On April 16th, Doug Ford announced an extension on the lockdown until sometime near the end of May. It means only June will see potentially a return to school.
This was disappointing for me and many other of my teenage friends to accept because not only could we not see each other at school, but due to the lockdown restrictions we couldn’t see each other during after-school hours, either.
In addition, new rules include essential shopping and curbside pickup only. These new rules meant that we could no longer shop at Devonshire Mall or any other “non-essential” shops in big groups together or individually.
As an athletic teen, myself and my friends enjoy playing sports, such as basketball. However, recreational amenities, such as basketball courts have been closed.

Not only can we not see each other in school, after school or hang out at the mall, but we can’t even gather a couple teens to play a game of basketball.
On an educational level, for those students struggling it is very hard to find a tutor or receive after-school help. In addition to this, I am in Grade 10 and since this is my second year in high school, I haven’t had a full year of the true “high school experience.”
I hope this lockdown will end later this month if all goes as planned, but until then wear your mask and stay safe.
