Major League Soccer has partnered with adidas to create the limited edition Primeblue jersey, made with Parley Ocean Plastic.
The league launched the campaign to raise awareness for environmental issues and create sustainable communities as part of the MLS WORKS’ year-long Greener Goals initiative. Each of the 24 MLS clubs will have their own version to debut in week 7 of the 2021 season.
Primeblue is a high-performance yard made with 50% Parley Ocean Plastic, an upcycled waste intercepted on the shorelines and coastal areas. The creation of the jerseys prevents the material from polluting the oceans and damaging its environment.
This isn’t the only way MLS will be raising awareness. The players’ match-worn jerseys from the game will be auctioned off to raise funds for each club’s foundation of choice.
MLS will also team up with Twitter to honor supporters of the league’s teams with a jersey swap during the weekend of May 29. Special fans who have made a positive impact on their communities will be recognized after each match that weekend with unique celebrations featuring the adidas Primeblue jerseys.
“We are proud to partner with Twitter to recognize the stories of fans doing amazing things in our communities,” said David Bruce, MLS SVP of Brand and Integrated Marketing in a league release.
“We are a League defined by our unique supporter culture and this program is a way to honor inspirational fans and to share the positive impact of the MLS soccer community.”
Fans can nominate those they believe deserve the recognition from May 20 to May 28 on twitter using the hashtag #JerseySwapEntry and explaining their story.
This is a phenomenal effort by the league to incorporate the fans by promoting a good cause. Winners will be announced in a special fashion via Twitter.
Primeblue jerseys will also be available for purchase on May 20 through the MLS website.
