New York Yankees center fielder Aaron Hicks hasn’t played since May 12 because of what was ultimately diagnosed to be a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist.
According to Greg Joyce of the New York Post, Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged Friday that Hicks will undergo surgery to repair the problem and might not return to team baseball-related activities until next spring training.
“Let’s get through the surgery and see what they say about it, about a potential timeline, and if that puts any point at the end of the season in play or not, probably too early to speculate on that,” Boone explained about the situation. He added “it’s going to be a while” before Hicks can play.
Hicks attempted a course of anti-inflammatories and hoped to eventually play through the issue. The 31-year-old was batting .194 with four home runs and 14 RBI at the time he was sidelined.
Per Bryan Hoch of the MLB website, it’s expected Brett Gardner will continue to start in center for Hicks until further notice. The Yankees might also trade for an outfielder and have been linked in rumors with Delino DeShields Jr. of the Texas Rangers.
