Along with an easing of COVID-19 restrictions that allowed golfers, boaters and others who enjoy outdoor activities to once again participate starting on Saturday, the provincial government announced family members and friends can visit long-term care homes to see residents for an outdoor visit.
“With the excellent uptake of vaccines in long-term care homes, it is the right time to make this very meaningful change that will benefit residents and their families,” said Merrilee Fullerton, Ontario’s Minister of Long-Term Care.
The government made the decision in consultation with the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health in developing a visitor policy and guidance document.
For those wishing to visit long-term care residents outdoors, there will be a maximum of two visitors at a time per resident, in addition to two essential caregiver(s). Children under the age of two years do not count towards the general visitor maximum.
Visitors will need to be actively screened upon arrival and should not proceed beyond entry points. Visitors will also be required to maintain physical distancing and wear masks.
With any long-term care residence without sufficient outdoor space, visits may take place in the general vicinity of the home, the ministry said.
As of Friday across Ontario, the government estimated 96 per cent of long-term care residents are fully vaccinated, along with 99 per cent of essential caregivers and 87 per cent of staff who have at least received their first dose.
