A strike planned by school support staff from May 26 at noon to May 27 at noon has forced the Centre de services scolaire de Montréal (CSSDM) to cancel elementary school classes on both days and cancel afternoon classes on May 26 and morning classes on May 27 at its high schools.
The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) says it’s cancelling all classes at the elementary and high school levels, and students will learn remotely from home outside strike hours, on the morning of May 26 and on the afternoon of May 27. Daycare and transportation won’t be offered on either day since students will be learning from home, it said. Members of the Association professionnelle du personnel administratif (CSN) have called the strike to express dissatisfaction with their collective bargaining with the Quebec government.
Meanwhile, the CSSDM said in a memo to parents on Friday the strike by its unionized employees affiliated with the Fédération des employées et employés de services publics (FEESP-CSN) “required adjustments in schools because of the picketing announced by the unions,” which it said will prevent access to schools and educational centres.

High school students in secondaries 3, 4 and 5, who attend school in person on alternating days because of the pandemic, are expected to show up either on the morning of May 26 or the afternoon of May 27, depending on which day they were already scheduled to attend.
The CSSDM said high school students attending special schools will receive instruction at home through remote learning on the morning of May 26 and the afternoon of May 27, before and after the strike. For the period during the strike, on the afternoon of May 26 and the morning of May 27, their teachers will provide them with work to do independently at home, the board said.
No CSSDM vocational or adult education classes will be offered during the strike on the afternoon of May 26 and the morning of May 27.
