Former chief minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal visited erosion hit areas of his home constituency Majuli along with Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika, Power Minister Bimal Bora and Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah and took stock of damage, loss and progress of protection works. The team inspected sites at Misamara, Salmara, Samoguri and Bhakat Chapori of the sacred river island district and officials were directed to mitigate damages at the earliest.
Sonowal said that Assam Government has taken up special plans to curb large scale erosion in Majuli and protect the river island district. He also stated that Minister Pijush Hazarika has already given directions to his department to implement the planned measures at the earliest.
He also added, “I thank the senior ministers and MP who came here on direction of the CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. I firmly believe that in the coming days, with the blessings of the people of Majuli, all plans taken by Assam Government will be implemented properly and Majuli will be protected.”
Majuli River Island is centre of Vashnavite culture in Assam. The island which has several Sattras (monasteries) is facing massive erosion problem. Available data indicate an erosion rate of 1.9 sq. km per year.
The island with a population of about 2 lakhs once covered a prosperous 1,500 square km, now it is being reduced to 665 sq km.
