Liverpool have wasted little time after their acquisition of Ibrahima Konate by turning their attentions to getting six new deals over the line for the bedrock of their current side.
Liverpool finished the season in top gear, winning eight out of their final ten matches to secure an unlikely third-placed finish. However, despite their late surge, Jurgen Klopp has already begun to reshape his squad as they once again seek to challenge for top honours.
RB Leipzig centre-half Konate saw his £36m release clause triggered. The French under-21 international will complete his move pending international clearance and attaining a work permit.
Additional moves are expected, with midfield likely to see a new recruit after Georginio Wijnaldum agreed terms over his next move.
But before further expenditures will be made, the Mirror (citing the PA) report that six current Reds are set to enter negotiations over six fresh contracts.
All six players involved are regular starters and are in many people’s eyes, the club’s most elite players.
Firstly, Mohamed Salah is mentioned. Rumours of unhappiness in the Egyptian’s camp swirled mid-season during Liverpool’s horror spell.
Fuelled by comments from his agent, a blockbuster move to Real Madrid or PSG was regularly touted. Nevertheless, Salah played a crucial role in the Reds’ misfiring forward line throughout the season. Ultimately he finished runner-up to Harry Kane in the race for the golden boot.
Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Fabinho are all stated to be in line for new deals. The sixth player named is Virgil van Dijk.
The Dutch colossus is in line to miss the upcoming Euro 2020 tournament as he continues his rehabilitation from a season-ending knee injury suffered in a collision with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Van Dijk will turn 30 in July and will face a battle to once again become a world class centre-back. Regardless, Liverpool’s decision to seek fresh terms indicates their faith that he will again reach the heights he previously attained.
Liverpool links to 34-goal striker re-emerge
Meanwhile, Liverpool are being linked with a man who could provide them with an exciting option up front.
A replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum and a forward are reportedly on Jurgen Klopp’s wishlist.
And a report on Zam Foot, cited on the Liverpool Echo, has seen links to RB Salzburg striker Patson Daka resurface.
The striker has previously been touted as a replacement for Roberto Firmino, who struggled for form during 2020/21.
Daka, meanwhile, was prolific. He hit 34 goals in 42 outings, including 27 in the league. His displays have reportedly caught the eye of Liverpool chiefs.
The 22-year-old’s price tag will also be appealing. Despite being contracted until the end of 2024, he is available for just €20m this summer. That could make him a more realistic target than the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.
