Boris Johnson married his fiancee Carrie Symonds during a secret ceremony held at Westminster Cathedral on Saturday.
Johnson and Symonds, who became engaged in 2019, exchanged vows in front of 30 guests invited to the ceremony at short notice, the Mail on Sunday reported.
The newspaper noted that Johnson, 56, is the first prime minister to wed in office since Lord Liverpool married Mary Chester in 1822.
The news of the wedding was later confirmed by a spokesperson from the Prime Minister’s office and government ministers.
The couple is expected to make its first official appearance as husband and wife at the G7 summit in June.
Symonds, who was the Conservative Party’s head of communications before joining a marine conservation organization, is Johnson’s third wife.
She was recently in the limelight over accusations that Johnson secretly used funds from a Conservative Party donor to redecorate his apartment in Downing Street. The scandal centered on an £840-per-roll wallpaper that Symonds reportedly chose.
On Sunday, the news of Symonds and Johnson’s secret wedding stirred a flurry of congratulations.
Nadhim Zahawi, the U.K.’s vaccines minister, told Sky News that it was “a wonderful thing for both of them that they have really made their marriage vows to one another.”
Northern Ireland’s First Minister Arlene Foster also tweeted her “huge congratulations.”
