Michael Gove came into contact with someone with coronavirus when he went to the Champions League final in Portugal, the Cabinet Office said Friday.
The senior Conservative was alerted to the contact through the National Health Service’s COVID app days after the trip to Porto, where he watched Chelsea defeat Manchester City, the BBC reported.
Gove will not self-isolate for 10 days, which is the standard guidance, but will instead take part in a pilot scheme that replaces self-isolation with daily tests for seven days. Participants test themselves each morning, and as long as the results are negative and they have no symptoms, they “will be exempt from the legal duty to self-isolate that day and can leave their home to carry out essential activity.”
A spokesperson for the Cabinet Office minister said Gove “has followed COVID-19 regulations and guidance at all times and will continue to do so,” the BBC reported.
Portugal was on the U.K.’s travel “green” list at the time of Gove’s trip, but was removed from it on Thursday following a rise in cases. During the days around the Champions League final, preventative measures such as social distancing and mask wearing were not enforced by the authorities, provoking criticism of the Portuguese government.
