Kevin Adhika, a passenger on board the Queen of Cowichan, didn’t witness the man go into the water but says he saw someone dressed in dark clothing flailing in the vessel’s wake.
“A guy who was sitting about four feet away from me saw the guy jump overboard,” said Adhika. “All the crew members were then yelling for the captain to turn the boat around.”
A number of vessels, including the Ferry’s rescue boat, at least one Canadian Coast Guard vessel and a helicopter converged on the area in search of the man.
B.C. Ferries says it was the coast guard who retrieved the passenger from the water.
“At the time they were recovering the body, everyone was told to go to the other side of the boat,” Adhika said.
The Queen of Cowichan is now operating 60 minutes behind schedule.
