New Delhi: At least 16 people were killed and several injured as a bus fell of a bridge after colliding with a loader in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur on Tuesday evening. According to initial reports, the incident took place on outskirts of Kanpur in Sachendi area.
Around 30 people are said to be injured in the incident with some being critical. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the incident.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the PMNRF for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to a tragic accident.
The Centre would also give Rs 50,000 to those who were injured in the mishap.
“Saddened by the loss of lives due to the road accident in Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh today. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. I pray for a quick recovery of those injured,” BJP President JP Nadda tweeted.
Reportedly, the bus first hit a loader truck on the highway and then jumped off the bridge in Sachendi area of the city.
As soon as the incident was reported, UP Police reached to the spot and confirmed that at least 15 people lost their lives in the road mishap.
Rescue and relief operations are underway.
