FALMOUTH, England — A second potential outbreak of COVID-19 has occurred at the G7 summit in Cornwall at which the leaders of the most powerful democracies in the world gathered today.
A police officer, housed with hundreds of others on a cruise ship just off Falmouth harbour, tested positive for the virus, a statement from Cornwall and Devon police said.
Around 5,000 of the 6,500 police officers working on security at G7 have been brought in from other forces. The ship acting as their temporary barracks is the MS Silja Europa, a Baltic cruise ship.
The positive result from a lateral flow test came “during the early hours of 11 June” the statement read. It was an officer “who is currently supporting G7 policing and accommodated on the ferry.” The officer and those whom they have had close contact with — 12 people in total — are now self-isolating away from the ship.
“The next stage is for those who have tested positive to undertake a PCR test,” the statement read.
It comes a day after an outbreak at another location in Cornwall where a member of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s security team was staying.
“After corona infections became known in a hotel in St. Ives, a member of the German advance delegation has gone into quarantine as a precaution. This does not affect the trip of the chancellor and her delegation to the G7 summit in Carbis Bay,” a german government spokesperson said.
