Jesse Golden & I met AFTER I started stalking her on Instagram.
Someone she popped up on my explore page & she was just so radiant & vibrant with the best energy. Immediately I purchased her book The Golden Secrets to Optimal Health.
Fast forward a couple years & I invited her to come on the podcast where we talked about butthole sunning, enema & wellness.
Today Jesse is on the blog for a little Q&A where you’ll learn about the history of Thieves oil ( just obsessed with the spray- my god ), the wellness practices she swears by & how she took her health matters into her own hands when she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.
Let’s get right to it. Welcome to the blog Jesse!
♡♡♡
♡ Introduce yourself to The Skinny Confidential community.
Jesse Golden: Hi loves, my name is Jesse Golden. I am a devoted mother, wife, holistic health practitioner, yoga teacher, woman thriving with rheumatoid arthritis, author of The Golden Secrets to Optimal Health & CEO of The Golden Secrets skincare.
♡ Tell us how you got into the holistic field.
JG: Since childhood, I have been naturally drawn to holistic health. I have always had an innate aversion to things that were not natural or connected to Mother Nature, but two things in my life really progressed my passion & ultimately guided me to become a holistic health practitioner. One, the birth of my son & two, being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.
Seventeen years ago when I was pregnant with my son, I quickly realized that much of pregnancy care in modern medicine was all fear-based & strayed women far away from doing the very thing we were primally born to do~ tune into our motherly instinct. I chose the holistic route of pregnancy & birth, called the Khalsa Way – an extension of Kundalini yoga. I had a natural at-home water birth, ate my placenta, stayed home for 40 days & breast fed, had a family bed until my son naturally chose he was done at around four years old, & I continued to raise him in the attachment parenting method.
With my unexpected diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis at 29 years young, I further realized that allopathic medicine was simply designed to cover up the symptoms, often giving us side effects that blur the line between the disease itself & the negative side effects of the drug. More than anything, with chronic disease you must address the whole body & try to get to the root cause of the issue. This has been the most humbling teacher of my life. The constant quest to heal myself has ultimately taught me more than any school or certification ever could have.
♡ What are some weird wellness practices you do? Please break down 5 & include the benefits.
JG: Far Gazing – this is so important, especially these days as we are all spending so much time looking at everything close up on our phones & computers. We need to look far to not only keep our eyes healthy but to help prevent our eye muscles from straining & making our eyes appear smaller. Opening the eyes wide to the sky helps light get in, helping reset your circadian rhythm & widen the eye muscles, which also helps them relax & decrease wrinkles.
Yoni Sun Bathing – Yoni is a sanskrit word that translates to sacred space or source of all life – just like the sun. Yoni sun bathing is where you simply open your legs & have your yoni drink in the healing sunshine. The healing sun naturally helps kill bacteria, yeast & helps tone the muscles. This is one of the most sacred unions with mother nature. Other healing benefits include: manufacturing the essential Vitamin D, boosting the immune system, activating sexual energy, & helping to balance & harmonize the energy body. Fun fact: Before antibiotics came in the 1930s, sunlight therapy ( heliotherapy ) was proven as the most successful treatment for infectious disease.
Coffee Enemas – Coffee enemas were developed in the 1920-30s, most popularly through the Gerson Therapy. In general, humans have been colon cleansing in many different cultures since ancient times. When coffee is used it creates a form of liver dialysis that enhances detoxification in the liver. Every cell of blood passes through the liver every three minutes so you can imagine how important it is to keep the liver free of toxic build up. Some other benefits include: increased mood & energy, improved digestion, & clearer skin- including “liver spots”. Coffee Enemas helps relieve constipation, pain & can even help ease depression & anxiety.
Inversions – I try to get upside down once per day unless I am on my moon cycle. I have a yoga swing in my kitchen which allows me to easily get upside down in a relaxed, restorative way. Simply putting your legs up against the wall, called Viparita Karani in yoga, can achieve the same thing. If you are comfortable with shoulder stands ( Sarvangasana), head stands ( Sirsasana ) etc., these are fantastic options. Anytime you place your head below your heart you positively influence your cardiovascular, lymphatic, nervous, endocrine, & immune system. Inversions also help you defy the negative effects of gravity on your face & skin.
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) – Tapping is a self-help technique that was developed by Gary Craig in the 1990s. It involves tapping near the end points of energy meridians in order to reduce tension & promote a deeper mind-body connection. I often use this technique to reduce & let go of pain I am holding onto in the body. I truly believe EFT will become another common mindfulness technique, much like meditation & yoga has in the last decade.
♡ Tell us about the magical Thieves’ mist that I’m obsessed with. Tell us the whole story.
JG: It’s called A Little Peace Of Mind & the formula, like all my formulas, is based on an ancient blend called Thieves Oil. In the beginning of the pandemic, there was so much fear & madness regarding antibacterial wipes, hand sanitizers & other toxic cleaning products. I wanted to give people a healthier option to empower them & ultimately bring them a peace of mind.
So like I do with everything in my life, I turned to nature & formulated my own immune protection blend, based on the traditional Thieves oil. To make it even more powerful in protecting the auric field, I added frankincense, sage & 100% organic non-toxic grape alcohol. After gifting some to my close friends & family & seeing the peace it brought them, I decided I had to make this immune protection blend available for the masses. I want to preface, this is a Limited-Edition product so it will retire soon but I have a feeling I will need to bring it back in the near future.
The story behind Thieves oil is fascinating & so parallel to what we experienced with the Coronavirus. Thieves oil dates back to the 1400s during the infamous Bubonic Plague ( aka The Black Death ) that devastated a large portion of Europe & Central Asia. The Black Death was so contagious that it was impossible to be in the vicinity of it without contracting it, & at the time that often meant your ultimate demise. All too similar to the fear going on now.
During this time, there were four thieves who were taking advantage of the situation & stealing from the sick & dying. They eventually got caught & at the time it was punishable by being burned alive. However, the judge was so intrigued that the four thieves had been in such close contact with the disease yet didn’t contract it, so he offered to spare them of their punishment if they shared how they stayed immune to the terrible disease. The thieves said they wore perfume & spices they got from merchants who were unemployed due to the closure of the seaports & the devastation of the plague. They had prepared an essential oil recipe ( clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus & rosemary ) that when applied to their hands, ears, temples, feet & mask over their mouths, this kept them safe from infection.
The judge stayed true to his word. The men were not burned alive, but instead they were hanged for their crimes. From then on, the doctors who treated the Black Death victims put the herbal infusion on their h&s, ears, temples & feet, & wore beak-like masks stuffed with cloths containing this special blend, known now as Thieves Oil. With that, essential oils were recorded in history as one of the wonders of nature.
♡ How are certain oils healing? Oils are one of mother nature’s greatest gifts.
JG: If I could only share one ultimate skin hack, it is to make oils your best friend. Many individuals fear oils thinking that oils will make them break out – this is what the beauty industry has told us for years… that drying your skin out will help you have clear skin, but actually the opposite is true. If oily skin becomes dehydrated it will produce more oil to compensate & then cause breakouts. This is a vicious cycle.
The goal is to remove excess oil without stripping the skin of its natural protective barrier. Simple chemistry teaches us that like dissolves like, so if you need to balance the oil in your skin, the very thing you are avoiding is the very thing that will heal you. The bottom line: our skin needs oil to function properly. The top layers of our skin are oil-based & create a protective barrier to lock in hydration & help defend against bacteria & aging.
Not all oils are created equal & each has their own strengths for various purposes, but in general, oils are able to penetrate deep into the layers of the skin, where it matters most. Oil helps keep the collagen & matrix of your skin supple & firm. Many oils are rich in omegas, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, & even Vitamin A- like my Youth Beauty Face Oil, which is formulated with 10 of the most nutrient-dense, organic oils & retinoic acid from rosehip, which gives you the same skin smoothing benefits of a synthetic retinol, without the toxic side effects & sun sensitivity.
♡ I know you’re a big fan of infrared. Tell us about your experience with that.
JG: I naturally run cold & have always loved heat so my infrared sauna is one of my happiest places to be. But more than that it has been a huge part of my healing journey. It aids in mitochondrial support, detoxification, decreases inflammation & pain. It can increase collagen production, help reduce cellulite, & help give you an overall sense of well-being.
Sweating in general is so important to help facilitate detoxification & keep things moving smoothly. Add a healing full-spectrum infrared light & it’s one of the best health biohacks. The infrared sauna I have also has negative ions, earthing, & no EMFs. I share all the products I talk about, use & love here.
♡ I also know that you love gua sha. Can you speak on that & why you love it?
JG: I was originally introduced to gua sha therapy as part of my healing journey for rheumatoid arthritis. Over a decade ago, at the beginning of my diagnosis, I sought help from many traditional Chinese doctors. One of them used gua sha therapy as part of my treatment for chronic pain, inflamed synovial joints & other areas of my body that were impinged & causing the most pain. I should preface that this was not a pleasurable experience.
She would put sesame oil on my joints & vigorously scrape them back & forth with the back of a spoon, horn & bian stone until the skin was bright red & visibly had the “sha” part of gua sha, also called “petechiae.” This rash coming to the surface would indicate the removal of blood stagnation inside my body, considered pathogenic in TCM ( Traditional Chinese Medicine ). Although painful, it was a part of my healing journey & has remained one of my go-to practices for helping me be able to thrive with rheumatoid arthritis.
Traditional gua sha applies a much more vigorous pressure ( even on the face) than the softer western approach. In the West, we have diluted this practice & made it more of a relaxing, therapeutic ritual. Generally you can apply more pressure on the body than the face but what’s most important is that you listen to your body’s signals & let it guide you. Find that sweet spot between pain & relaxation where you feel a positive sensation & change happening within your skin.
After years of using gua sha on my body to help with the pain & inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis, I later discovered the benefits of gua sha on my face. I was determined to source the most effective & powerful stone on the planet & that’s when I stumbled upon bian stone, which was the stone my Chinese doctor used on my joints years ago & the original stone used dating back to 305-204 B.C. Unrivaled by any other stone on the market, Bian stone has 40 trace elements ( 20 of them are anti-aging ), contains negative ions, creates therapeutic Far infra-Red (FIR) waves & therapeutic ultrasound. This stone has around 3,700 in generated ultrasonic pulses compared to other popular stones such as Jade stone at around 1,843. I was amazed at the efficacy & ability it had to naturally rejuvenate my skin. This is when I knew I had to bring this ancient, sacred practice to The Golden Secrets line & share it with you.
Gua Sha is so magical because it increases blood flow, oxygen & nutrients to the skin. Blocked blood flow throughout the body greatly affects how & when we begin showing signs of aging. If blood flow is blocked, the skin loses its luster, firmness & radiance causing it to age prematurely. The state of our face is a direct reflection of how well our circulating energy life force “qi” or blood flow is.
No matter what you do, if you do not take care of the blood flow system, you cannot make permanent changes to your face. The face is an extension of the whole body & reflects not only what’s happening on your face but what is happening in your body & mind. Treating the entire system is key for maximum results. This is why I have a specific stone for the face & a specific stone for the body.
Results of not taking care of the body & face & neglecting self-care = fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness, acne, dull/dry skin, jaw pain, etc. Cosmetic procedures are a quick-fix that need to be constantly repeated because the face will gradually go back to its natural pattern. The key to long-lasting results is to naturally change the pattern of the face & retrain the muscles & skin. This is why I love Gua Sha.
♡ How do you start your mornings & how do you end your day? We need all your routine details!
JG: I go through phases based on what my body & mind needs & the season we are in. I prefer the word ritual over routine. To me, a routine is more of a robotic act that you do no matter what. A ritual is tuning in & asking yourself what you need, & bringing mindfulness & intention into it. So even though I do have some consistency in my habits, I switch them up based on how I feel & what my body is craving each day.
Some general things I often do in the morning include: oil pulling, red light therapy, meditation, coffee, sun therapy, inversions, rebounding & grounding. Two other things I love doing in the morning that help get me going on the right foot are: one, listening to Dr. Wayne Dyer & two, putting on music that puts me in a high vibe & encourages me to dance.
The end of the day is often when I spend more time on self-care. This is when I usually do my dry brushing, sauna, & gua sha rituals. I do feel these practices are best performed earlier in the day to allow the lymph the rest of the day to flush, but my schedule often has me doing it later in the day. These practices help me unwind & the benefits remain.
Herbal tea making is another ritual of mine that I like to do after dinner. I also love walking after dinner & stretching in bed just before I go to sleep. The one thing I do every night is count my blessings & pray that I am able to use my life for the highest good of all.
♡ What are some of your favorite food & drink products & why?
JG: Hydrogen water– Highly antioxidant-rich water that reduces oxidative stress & inflammation in the body- two of the main causes of aging.
Carrot juice– I drink carrot juice at least twice a week. Loaded with antioxidants, potassium & a type of carotenoid called beta-carotene that the body can convert into Vitamin A. Carrot juice gives you a natural golden glow from within.
Bone broth– Rich in collagen & fat-soluble nutrients, it heals the gut & supports skin, hair, nail, bone & dental health.
Ramen– I love soups! There is no mistake that almost every culture has their own form of healing soup…chicken soup, miso soup, bortsch etc. I load up as many veggies as I can, use bone broth, noodles, & if my husband is cooking a steak, which he often is, he will throw some in my soup for me.
Mexican– I could eat guacamole at every meal. My family & I have taco night at least once a week. Plus! I am one of the owners of the incredible Vegan Mexican restaurant here in Los Angeles called Sugar Taco!
♡ Cocktail of choice?
JG: I don’t drink much at all but if I had to choose I would say sake or a skinny, spicy margarita with jalapeno & salt.
♡ What are some tools you have in your toolbox to help with anxiety?
JG: CBD is one.
4-7-8 breathing: Inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8 all through the nose.
Be where your feet are. Simply look down at your feet to get into your body & into the present moment.
Bach Rescue Remedy
Go through the 5 senses: Sight- find something to focus on. Sound- pay attention to the sounds you are hearing. Smell-take a deep breath & see what you smell. Taste-enjoy something you can taste. Touch-feel something nearby.
♡ Do you have any boundaries when it comes to social media? If so, what are they?
JG: Yes! I have boundaries with anything that takes me away from the present moment & my family. Social media has been a blessing & curse to many of us. A blessing because it has allowed us to share & connect with people that we wouldn’t have the opportunity to otherwise, from the comfort of our own home. It is a curse because it has taken us away from our actual life & created an unhealthy habit by rewarding those who engage, post, & spend the most time on social media.
I have had some experiences on social media that have really been disheartening for me & discouraged me from sharing as freely as I would like. I used to have more energy to respond to every comment, especially any negative comments, as I felt it was my duty to help those hurting in anger. But recently I found that I get too deeply affected by this & it’s simply not healthy for my peace of mind.
It seems no matter who you are or what you post & share these days, even if it comes straight from your heart, there will be someone who will have a problem with it. I realize I can only teach by being. I take my social platforms very seriously & try to use every interaction as an opportunity to create more light into the world. Every post & every caption comes straight from my heart with thoughtful intention.
If I do not feel inspired, then I simply do not post. I used to feel the need to post every single day to feed the ‘algorithm gods’ but have decided I am way more effective when I am intuitively inspired to post instead of posting because I feel like I need to keep up with something. I also only “like” what I want to see more of in the world. I try to create the world I want to see by my own actions. Seeking a healthy balance in all things is necessary & social media is a perfect place to practice that.
♡ Tell us all about your book, product line & where everyone can find you!

My product line, The Golden Secrets, was an accidental business. I have made my own products since high school & for years people have asked me what my golden secret was. To be honest, I never wanted to share. I was so protective over my sacred formulas, but then one day, a friend of mine whom I really admire in business said: “Jesse, why don’t you put your skincare on your site?”
At that time, I just had a blog, The Golden Secrets, where I would share all things holistic health, yoga, beauty, spirituality, parenting & so on. I realized at that moment that my life’s mission was to share things that have worked for me & elevated my life to the next level. My skincare creations were such a huge part of my path to wellness & rituals of self love, I had to share!
So, I started with one product & it took off! Here I am now with a thriving skincare & wellness line ~ empowering people to connect back to Mother Nature & organic beauty, to love themselves through self-care rituals, trust their intuition & be radiant no matter their age.
