“I’d noticed her taking pictures and I was trying to think of how I could ask her to get some without (Moore) noticing,” Dekker recalled Saturday.
Her had contacted a few photographers about doing surprise engagement photos, but nothing clicked.
Emily Peter was more than happy to help. She’d gone up the mountain with two friends to take photos. She noticed the couple waiting for sunrise and asked if she could take some of them.
As golden light suffused the scene, she asked them to move to a better spot. Dekker seized the moment.
“He said he had a better idea and pulled out a ring. I was shocked,” said Peter, who continued snapping.
Moore said she was also surprised, but had an inkling it might be a special morning when Dekker suggested the sunrise hike.
“It was so exciting,” she said.
Dekker and Moore, both 19, have been dating for about a year-and-a-half. They met at a Bible college in New Zealand. He’s originally from Southern Alberta, while she’s from Arizona. When she decided to take courses to become an educational assistant at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, he moved to B.C. and got a job at a potato farm.
They don’t believe in luck or chance.
“God put it all together,” said Dekker.
When Postmedia reached them Saturday morning, they’d just set a date for their wedding: April 3.
