“(Community members) will also recommend actions to address those (systemic) barriers, and will assist in identifying opportunities to work with community partners and organizations on actions to address structural racism on a community-wide level.”
Police said the 11-person anti-racism committee will be “diverse and inclusive.” They said an ideal candidate for the position would be someone who is engaged in the community, has lived experience of racism or experience in anti-racism work and the ability to develop and maintain “strong collaborative relationships.”
Additionally, they are looking for Calgarians who understand a range of civil rights issues and systemic racism while being open to support steps toward “meaningful, positive change.”
Committee members will be expected to commit to a one-year term with monthly meetings, unless otherwise determined. Co-chairs will be nominated and elected by members.
Key responsibilities, as outlined by the police, include:
- Advising on the development of the anti-racism, equity, diversity and inclusion strategy
- Identifying systemic barriers to accessing police programs and services
- Identifying language barriers in accessing information related to police services and programs
- Identifying opportunities to work with community organizations to address structural racism
- Engaging with community stakeholders
