Police say a 78-year-old Vancouver man has died from injuries suffered after being struck by an SUV on Friday.
Vancouver police spokesperson Sgt. Steve Addison says the pedestrian accident occurred following a multi-vehicle collision around 12:20 p.m. near Broadway and Alberta Street. An eastbound Fiat 500 collided with a eastbound Ford Explorer which caused the SUV to veer into two parked cars and then onto the sidewalk where it struck the man and his 72-year-old wife.
The man, whose name was not released, died in hospital Sunday. It was Vancouver’s eighth fatal collision of 2020.
His wife suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive, the VPD said.
“This incident is truly a tragedy, and for it to happen just a week before Christmas is heartbreaking,” said Addison. “We’re asking for witnesses to come forward and speak to police so we can begin to provide answers to everyone involved.”
The driver of the Fiat, a 29-year-old woman from Burnaby, and the driver to the Explorer, a 30-year-old woman from Vancouver, were not injured.
Addison said neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the accident, and no charges have been laid at this time.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or anyone with dashcam footage is asked the call VPD’s collision investigation unit at 604-717-3012.
