Montreal police issued more than $400,000 worth of tickets to anti-mask demonstrators on Sunday, handing out notices of 269 infractions to offenders, each of which will cost the recipient $1,546.
The fines — $1,000 for the offence itself, administrative costs of $296 as well as a $250 surcharge — were issued for various infractions committed during a downtown march that organizers described as a “Méga Rassemblement Familial de Noël” (Mega Family Christmas Gathering).
The demonstrators took to the streets Sunday afternoon to express their displeasure with provincial rules enacted during the pandemic, such as mandatory mask-wearing and physical distancing, both of which are required during public demonstrations of any kind. They began their rally in front of the Montreal offices of Quebec Premier François Legault and then marched about two kilometres east along Sherbrooke St. to Parc La Fontaine.
