Behind the scenes: Manchester City secure third successive Carabao Cup
Brentford, who sit fourth in the Championship after coming up short in last season’s play-off final, will seek to upset Newcastle, who are 12th in the Premier League, as they bid for a spot in the final four of the competition. The Championship side have two wins and three draws in their last five games, while Steve Bruce’s team have two wins, two defeats and a loss across the same number of matches.
Newcastle were eliminated by Leicester on penalties in the second round of the Carabao Cup last season, so have already drastically improved upon last term’s efforts in the tournament, but fans of the club are still of the belief that their players should be able to go all the way in a cup competition.
Brentford supporters, however will certainly see this as a winnable tie, and if the Bees are to succeed in getting past Newcastle tonight, they could come up against the winners between Arsenal and Manchester City, Everton and Man United, or Stoke and Spurs in the semi-finals.

HEAD TO HEAD
Newcastle have won the last six meetings between these teams in all competitions – though only one of those games have come in the last (nearly) four years.
Brentford’s last success was back in 1948 in the old League Division Two! The last League Cup meeting was a 4-1 Newcastle win in 2001.

NEWCASTLE IN THE EFL CUP
As for the Magpies, they were runners-up in 75/76 but have never won the competition themselves either, while they last reached the quarter-final stage in 16/17. Newcastle haven’t reached a domestic cup semi-final since 2005 – so a win here will end the long-overdue wait to be in the last four.

BRENTFORD IN THE EFL CUP
The Bees have never won this competition. Never reached the final or the semis, in fact. Their best run until this season was to the fourth round in 1982/83, and again in 2010/11. So it’s already a club-best by reaching this stage and one more win will put them in iconic status with the fans, particularly if they can combine it with promotion to the Premier League.

BIG CUP NIGHT!
Evening all! There’s naturally little chance that either of these sides end up lifting the trophy, with Spurs, Man City, Man United and Everton all left in the competition, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have hope.
Win this game and it’s into the semi-finals, from which point absolutely anything can happen on the day.
