Four legion branches in the city and county will share $43,380 in federal funding, local MP Irek Kusmierczyk (L—Windsor-Tecumseh) announced Tuesday.
Royal Canadian Legion branches 12, 255, 261 and 594 will each receive $10,845.
“As a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 255, I have witnessed first-hand the tremendous difference Veterans organizations make in the lives of Veterans and the communities in which they reside,” Kusmierczyk said in a news release.
“This funding will assist Royal Canadian Legion branches in Windsor-Essex with operating costs so they can focus on providing essential services and support for Veterans and their families at a time when it is needed most.”
Last month, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Veteran Affairs Minister Lawrence MacAulay announced the creation of a $20-million Veterans Organizations Emergency Support Fund to help veterans’ organizations with financial hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
And $14 million was allocated directly to the Royal Canadian Legion’s Dominion Command to allow for rapid distribution of financial aid to individual branches.
The national organization has 260,000 members and 1,350 branches from coast to coast to coast.
