A statement from federal Health Minister Patty Hajdu last week expressed surprise over Ford’s statements, claiming they’ve worked with Queen’s Park on a Toronto testing program for weeks.
Hajdu insisted the measures in place since March are working.
“Only 1.3% of all known COVID-19 cases in Ontario have originated from travel outside the country,” she said.
“With a 14-day quarantine in place, our border measures are some of the strongest in the world.”
Sources said Ford’s plan is 17 times larger than what’s currently in place in Alberta, leading to concerns over safely administering a program of that size.
This political back-and-forth means little to Armann, who just wants the government to stop playing games and enact a workable plan to restart Canada’s faltering aviation industry.
“Pilots and air traffic controllers are in a layoff situation, and they’re very difficult to retrain and rehire,” he said.
“If the federal government wants our economy to re-light, there needs to be people employed to do it.”
Only seven out of his union’s 452 members are currently piloting Sunwing planes, he said.
