On 24 December 2020, the UK and EU agreed a new Trade and Cooperation Agreement to govern the future trading and security relationship once the United Kingdom will definitely have left the block, on 31 December.
As a result of the months-long negotiations there will be tariff-free and quota-free trade in goods between the UK and the EU. There will also be continued social security coordination between the UK and the EU, including healthcare coverage for EU and UK visitors. Limited data-sharing will also continue for security purposes, including on DNA profiles, fingerprints, vehicle registrations, and passenger name records. The UK is backing out of the Erasmus European student exchange programme.
