Over the past two days, there has been an added 439 positive cases of COVID-19, according to numbers released Saturday by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.
There has also been an increase of eight deaths over that time frame.
Among those who died are five from the community — a woman in her 50s, a woman in her 60s, a man in his 70s and two women in their 80s. Three of those who died were residents in long-term care that included two women in their 70s and woman in her 80s.
There has now been a total of 145 deaths in the community attributed to the virus — among an overall total of 8,085 confirmed cases.
Of the reported cases in the last two days — 257 cases were reported on New Year’s Eve and 182 cases reported on New Year’s Day.
Of the latest cases, 60 are outbreak related, while four were community acquired, one a close contact of a confirmed case and 374 cases still being investigated.
There are currently 2,280 active cases of the virus, with 103 cases hospitalized.
There are presently 20 long-term care or retirement homes listed as being in a COVID-19 outbreak, plus 16 workplaces.
