At the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, the Town of Lakeshore became the Municipality of Lakeshore.
“People are not going to see any big change,” said Mayor Tom Bain. “It’s just a name change.
“There really should be no difference whatsoever noticed by the people other than it will be a name change.”
Town council made the decision earlier in the year to designate Lakeshore a municipality, with the switch being made gradually to help reduce expenses associated with converting signage and documents.
Bain said the idea for the change was to give “more distinction of each of the local towns in the area.
“We are one municipality but made up of a number of smaller towns,” he said.
The towns range from Puce to Comber, Belle River to St. Joachim, Woodslee, Staples, Emeryville and Pointe-aux-Roches.
Amalgamation brought Belle River together with the townships of Maidstone, Rochester, Tilbury North and Tilbury West in 1999.
