Authorities later found the stolen vehicle near the West Kootenay village of Salmo, about 80 kilometres northwest of Creston.
On Thursday, RCMP said another man, who may be linked to the double murder, was found dead in Salmo.
RCMP say that shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Thursday police received a call about a man passed out near an electrical shed at a motel. The man was dead when officers arrived.
“While we have yet to confirm this man is connected to the ongoing homicide investigation we are certainly alive to the possibility,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, a spokesperson for the B.C. RCMP Southeast District, in a statement.
The B.C. Coroners Service is conducting its own investigation into the Salmo death and is working to determine the dead man’s identity.
It’s too early in the investigation to determine a motive or cause of the homicides, said O’Donaghey, but police don’t believe there is any risk to the public.
“We understand there is significant interest in both investigations, however we ask the public to avoid the area, to allow the investigation into the man’s death to continue,” said O’Donaghey.
“It’s a very sad situation and tragic no doubt for the families but we’re working hard to determine what happened.”
Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Creston RCMP at 250-428-9313 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
