Last night, Apple TV+ debuted their awards player Cherry, as well as released a Teaser Trailer. The former represented its attempt to capture some Oscar buzz, while the latter is their move to alert audiences to the film’s existence. After all, the movie features Tom Holland reuniting with his Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame directors (Joe Russo and Anthony Russo), so it makes sense to remind folks. Is it a potential spoiler at the tail end of the season? Well, that remains to be seen, but I was among the press who watched the flick yesterday, so I have a bit of a clue. More on that below, as well as the Teaser Trailer, which is basically just a short clip.
The movie is a crime drama, attempting to tell a classic story in a new way. The official synopsis from Apple TV+ is as follows: ““Cherry” follows the wild journey of a disenfranchised young man from Ohio who meets the love of his life, only to risk losing her through a series of bad decisions and challenging life circumstances. Inspired by the best-selling novel of the same name, “Cherry” features Tom Holland in the title role as an unhinged character who drifts from dropping out of college to serving in Iraq as an Army medic and is only anchored by his one true love, Emily (Ciara Bravo). When Cherry returns home a war hero, he battles the demons of undiagnosed PTSD and spirals into drug addiction, surrounding himself with a menagerie of depraved misfits. Draining his finances, Cherry turns to bank robbing to fund his addiction, shattering his relationship with Emily along the way. Brought to the screen in bold, gritty fashion by visionary directors Anthony and Joe Russo, “Cherry” is a darkly humorous, unflinching coming-of-age story of a man on a universal quest for purpose and human connection.”
Having seen the film, I can vouch for Tom Holland being excellent. The movie itself has some inspired moments and some cliched ones, but Holland, as we’ll as Ciara Bravo, do very good work. More on it next month, but for now, get introduced to Cherry with this clip/teaser:
Stay tuned for more on Cherry!
