AgeCare Skypointe has been hit harder than any other continuing-care site in Calgary, becoming the city’s deadliest outbreak.
As of Saturday, 31 residents at the facility had died of COVID-19. To date, 174 residents have tested positive for the virus, with 48 of those cases still considered active. A staggering 145 staff also tested positive, bringing the total number of infections at the facility to 299.
The situation is similarly grim at AgeCare Walden Heights in southeast Calgary. There, 22 residents have died from COVID-19, and a total of 176 cases have been detected. Those infections break down to 102 in residents, with 17 remaining active, and 74 in staff.
Monty Carter, whose 92-year-old mother has lived at the Walden facility for more than half a decade, said the facility has maintained a high level of care since he received a frightening call in late November that his mother was among the site’s first cases of COVID-19 in residents. The virus was thought to have been brought into the facility by an asymptomatic worker.
She since recovered after a mild illness that did not require hospitalization, and is now working to overcome lung capacity challenges.
“We talked to her every day, we talked to nursing every day,” Carter said. “Overall, I empathize (with staff). It’s obviously a challenging time for them. But in my mind they did as good a job as possible under the circumstances.”
Carter was able to visit with his mother, who has received her first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, earlier this week.
