I agree with many recent opinions in letters and columns by those who don’t like the name of the new bridge, the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
Why was former Prime Minister Stephen Harper arbitrarily allowed to name it after a favourite hockey player?
Recently, many big city arenas, stadiums, skyscrapers and bridges around the globe have a major companies which purchased naming rights to these landmarks.
I believe our new bridge will be the Golden Goose of naming rights.
The government could recoup hundreds of millions of dollars — if not more — by selling a long-term naming rights of the bridge to a major corporation. What company wouldn’t want the prestige of having their name on arguably the world’s most important and well-known international crossing?
Do you think it’s tacky selling to highest bidder? Maybe.
But I’m pretty sure the government can use the money.
